The Olympique Lyonnais player Houssem Aouar returned, this Sunday, March 19, in Téléfoot, to his remarks concerning his regret at having chosen the France team after having opted for Algeria.

An update. Houssem Aouar returned this Sunday to his statements concerning the France team after having chosen, at the end of last week, to represent Algeria. When justifying his decision, the OL midfielder notably regretted to have opted for the Blues, whose jersey he wore once in a friendly match against Ukraine in October 2020. “To be honest, after choosing the France team at the time, I felt regret. I felt that I had not made the choice that suited me personally,” he said last Thursday in a video released by the Algerian Football Federation.

A few days later, he insisted on clarifying his thoughts. “I don’t regret having worn the blue jersey. That’s not what I meant, it’s been misinterpreted, misunderstood and misunderstood. I said that I regret not having chosen Algeria earlier. It is not a choice against France, far from it. I was trained here, I’m French too. I learned a lot with the French training. I rubbed shoulders with great players and good educators,” he said in an interview with Téléfoot.

His choice, but also his words were not necessarily very well received by some Lyon supporters who whistled their player during the match of the 28th day of Ligue 1, Friday, against Nantes (1-1). Touched, Houssem Aouar recalled that it was not a “default choice”. “By making this choice, I was never told that it was going to be all acquired, that I was going to come and that I was going to have the necessary playing time. Not at all, I am on an equal footing with the rest of the group and available to the coach (Djamel Belmadi, editor’s note)”, he added.

And Houssem Aouar will still have to wait before knowing his first selection in the Algerian jersey because, short of rhythm, he was not called up for the double confrontation against Niger (March 23 and 27) as part of the qualifiers for the next African Cup of Nations.
