Since the publication of the first DualSense Edge tests, everyone agrees that Sony’s new controller lasts much less than its standard version. According to the manufacturer, this is due to the features that have been added to this premium model. If, factually, this is not false, another resolution can also explain this drop in autonomy.

DualSense Edge

Today Sony launches its DualSense Edge on the market. For the modest sum of €240, which is sure to make some teeth cringe, players will have access to many additional features compared to the standard controller of the PS5. Increased customization, profile configuration, neat design, this new controller is therefore aimed at the most demanding players. This does not prevent it from having some flaws.

We mentioned it in our test, difficult not to notice the drop in autonomy compared to the standard DualSense. While it works for a good ten hours, the Edge model only lasts 8 hours on average. A concern also assumed by Sony, which admits autonomy “slightly lower” due to the presence of “more features in […] the same ergonomic design ». But that’s not the only reason.

The DualSense Edge has a smaller battery than the standard version

This is indeed what a disassembly of the controller, carried out by the Budd’s Controllers teams, reveals. Just look at the battery to understand: it is significantly smaller than that of the standard DualSense. Specifically, the DualSense Edge is equipped with a 1050 mAh battery, compared to 1560 mAh for its big sister. For comparison, the PS4 Dualshock is powered by a 1000 mAh battery.

Suffice to say that this is an element not to be overlooked when approaching the autonomy of the controller, although this drop can be compensated by better energy efficiency. This is where these new features touted by Sony come into play. Indeed, these additions were necessarily made at the expense of the space available for the battery inside the design. In life, you have to make choices.
