“We weren't there for the Olympics, we regretted it”: on the Champs-Élysées, the spectators' second chance

“We experienced the Olympics from our living room. This time, we wanted to be part of it.” A week ago, Véronique and Jean-Paul, who live in Marseille, decided to go to Paris to watch the Paralympic competitions. It was not a whim, but a nagging regret at having missed what they call the “first Games,” the ones that took place from July 26 to August 11. So, this Wednesday, August 28, in the evening, they had a front row seat with thousands of other people on the Champs-Élysées to watch the opening ceremony and especially the athletes' parade for free.

“We were very busy at the time of the Olympics. We were able to go see a football match at the Vélodrome with our children. But that's all. We followed Léon Marchand's medals on TV, the basketball, the judo,” continues Véronique. “There was a collective enthusiasm, we didn't hear any more talk of politics. It was an enchanted interlude in this gloomy climate, with competitions in beautiful locations.”
