The World Health Organization (WHO) on Wednesday declared its highest level of global alert over the spread of monkeypox, boosted by the emergence of a new variant making the virus a more dangerous disease. Sweden announced on Thursday that it had detected this variant on its territory, a first outside Africa since its emergence.
According to health authorities, the patient is being treated in the Stockholm region. He had recently travelled to an affected region, they continued.
The WHO had already triggered its highest level of alert in July 2022, when a mpox epidemic spread across the world, before lifting it in May 2023. The 15 members of the emergency committee “all” considered that the criteria were met to declare an international public health emergency in the face of the increase in cases in Africa.
