Brussels has given Kyiv €4.2 billion as part of a four-year programme to help the country recover. In Kursk, Ukrainian troops continue their advance.
4.2 billion euros. This is the amount that Kyiv has just received from the European Union. A sum paid within the framework of the Ukraine Facility program, which is a four-year financial support promised by Brussels.
The announcement of the payment of this sum comes in the midst of an incursion by Ukrainian troops into Kursk, on Russian territory. Brussels specifies that it is not involved in this offensive.
“The EU is not involved and does not comment on operational developments on the front line. We fully support Ukraine in the legitimate exercise of its inherent rights to self-defense and in its efforts to restore its territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as to repel and combat Russia's illegal aggression.”said Nabila Massrali, spokesperson for the European Commission.
A week after the start of their offensive in Kursk, Ukrainian troops continue their advance and claim control of 1,000 km² in the region. But the authorities assure that Kyiv does not intend to annex territory from Russia.
In a video message, Volodymyr Zelensky alluded to this offensive, and said he wanted to force Moscow to make peace.
“It is right to destroy Russian terrorists where they are, where they launch their attacks. We see how useful this can be in bringing peace closer. Russia must be forced into peace if Putin is so keen to continue waging war.”the Ukrainian president said.
Faced with the Ukrainian breakthrough, Russia, which promised a response, launched a drone and ballistic missile attack in Ukraine on the night of Monday to Tuesday.
On Monday, Vladimir Putin held a security meeting on the crisis, during which he promised to expel Ukrainian troops from Russian territory.
