Glencore scandal: Akere Muna demands the disclosure of the names of the Cameroonian officials involved

The temperature is hellish, just like boiling oil. The Glencore scandal, which so far only shows silhouettes of senior Cameroonian government officials soaked to the neck, must make the masks fall. In any case, this is the visceral wish of Me Akere Muna.

In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), the international lawyer updated the public on the progress of the legal proceedings in the UK and his efforts to expose corrupt Cameroonian officials. He cited an announcement by the UK Attorney General authorising the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) to prosecute individuals for acts of corruption linked to Glencore. The company admitted to using private jets to transport funds intended for the corruption of senior officials in Cameroon and Nigeria.

Mr Muna encouraged the Cameroonian diaspora in the UK to mobilise for a peaceful march and to submit a petition to the British Attorney General, demanding the disclosure of the names of corrupt Cameroonians. He hopes that the details revealed during the trial in London will provide clues as to the identity of those involved.

When details of the operations are revealed in court in London, clues as to the identity of the Cameroonians involved will surely emerge. I encourage Cameroonians in the UK to join me in organising a peaceful march to present a petition to the UK Attorney General, asking him to make public the names of these corrupt Cameroonians. ” he wrote precisely.

Indeed, Glencore, which admitted to paying bribes in several African countries, was fined 320 million euros. Glencore Chairman Kalidas Madhavpeddi called the actions “inexcusable”.

The reaction in Cameroon is strong, with citizens and activists like Agbor Balla and Rebecca Enonchong demanding that the names be made public. They highlight the devastating impact of corruption on the country's development and call for accountability.
