Early on the morning of 5 August, a tragic multi-vehicle collision occurred on the Yaoundé-Douala road near Pouma in the Sanaga-Maritime department of the Littoral region. The accident involved three vehicles and caused a devastating fire, leaving one passenger dead and several injured. The injured were quickly transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
This incident is the second major accident on this road in 24 hours. On August 4, the Rector of the University of Douala, Professor Lagloire Ondoa, narrowly survived a violent accident. The Secretary General of the University, Professor Henri Désiré Modi Koko Bebey, confirmed the same day that Professor Ondoa had been quickly transported to Laquintinie Hospital in Douala and was now out of danger.
The frequency of accidents on the Douala-Yaoundé National Road 3 is alarming, especially during the holiday period. This section has seen a significant number of deaths in recent months. The ongoing construction of the highway between Yaoundé, the political capital, and Douala, the economic capital of Cameroon, is expected to significantly reduce the number of accidents once completed. However, until the project is completed, the safety of travelers on this critical axis remains a major concern.
At the time of writing, it is not yet known how many people were injured in the second accident, but the one involving Professor Lagloire Ondoa has been confirmed to be a near-fatal accident.
This is a developing story and more information will be provided as we receive it.
