Alsace: Woman killed after being knocked down by a car, driver surrenders after initially fleeing

A 34-year-old woman was fatally struck on Wednesday evening around 10:30 p.m. in Hœnheim (Bas-Rhin), near Strasbourg, by a car whose driver, who did not have a license, surrendered to the police after fleeing, according to the fire brigade and police. “The firefighters intervened for a traffic accident involving a car and a 34-year-old woman” who “died instantly”, the Bas-Rhin fire and rescue service (Sdis) said in a press release.

“The vehicle was travelling at high speed and fled,” said the local Sdis.

According to the police, the driver also hit another vehicle during the accident. He then drove to the neighbouring town of Souffelweyersheim, which is located in the gendarmerie zone, where he left his vehicle and fled on foot.

At around 11:50 p.m., the gendarmerie crew, who were carrying out initial checks on the vehicle, saw a car approaching them, one of whose occupants explained that he was the driver responsible for the accident, the same source added. The man, born in 2005, explained to them that he had fled because he did not have a license, according to the police.
