French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, whose resignation as prime minister was accepted by President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday, said he did not expect to lead the cabinet again, RIA News Agency reports.
Earlier on Tuesday, Macron said that after the resignation, the ministers will continue to perform their duties, they will be responsible for “managing current affairs” until a new cabinet is formed, this situation could last for several weeks, probably until the end of the Olympic Games. This means that the government will not propose legislative initiatives, but will be able to react in emergency situations, for example by declaring a state of emergency.
“Unlike many political leaders who have spoken out in recent days, I am not seeking to become the next Prime Minister, I will not be the next Prime Minister. I have just presented my resignation, which has been accepted by the President of the Republic,” Attal declared on the TF1 television channel.
He stressed that as the head of the presidential faction in parliament, he wants to “work with representatives of the right-wing Republicans and the left-wing Social Democrats.”
Attal said that in the coming days his faction “will be forced to take the political initiative, to propose an action plan for the French people, essentially on measures, compromises and the work that we want to do with other political groups,” with the exception of the far right and the far left.
He added that as the Olympics approach, the current government “will continue to assume its responsibilities” and “in the event of a crisis, will take all decisions to protect the French.”
