Moscow and Kyiv have announced a new exchange of prisoners of war. Each side has released 95 servicemen.
Russia and Ukraine announced a new prisoner of war exchange on Wednesday, with each side releasing 95 servicemen, less than a month after a previous swap.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed the release of 95 people serving in the army, national guard and border guards. Some of them had spent more than two years in captivity.
“No matter how difficult it is, we are looking for everyone who is in captivity. We have a duty to bring everyone back.”he wrote on his X account. He also posted photos of the released servicemen, all of whom had shaved heads and were wrapped in Ukrainian flags.
For its part, the Russian Defense Ministry said the released Russian soldiers would be flown to Moscow for medical treatment and rehabilitation.
This is the 54th prisoner exchange since the start of the Russian offensive against Ukraine. On June 5, Vladimir Putin claimed that Russia was holding 6,465 Ukrainian soldiers, compared to 1,348 Russian military personnel held in Ukraine. Kyiv has not corroborated these figures.
