Olympic Games: a giant military camp at the gates of Paris

Built in just two months, the camp is expected to accommodate 15,000 soldiers until September.

Thousands of soldiers arrived in Paris on Tuesday to ensure security for the Olympic Games.

They are housed in a huge camp called ” Corporal Alain Mimoun » tribute to the former French long-distance runner and Olympic marathon champion in 1956 in Melbourne.

Our mission will be to secure the sites of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, so that’s the Sentinel missiona mission that we know very well, and for which we are trained, reservists as well as active military personnel.” explains a young soldier who has just arrived on site.

Built in the east of the capital, near the Bois de Vincennes, and located less than 30 minutes from all the Olympic sites, the camp occupies a strategic position for operations in the Paris region. It can accommodate 4,500 soldiers. The latter are housed in chalets on stilts, fifteen per dormitory.

Built in just two months

The military base has an operations center, a giant mess hall, an infirmary, and was built in just 65 days.

A total of 15,000 soldiers will be deployed there until September. The head of the camp, a very experienced colonel, says he is impressed by the structure he will have to command.

I have forty years of army behind me, it is the first time that I see this type of achievement. Since the Second World War, it is the biggest camp ever built in Paris.” he declares

15 million visitors are expected in Paris and other Olympic sites in France over the coming weeks.
