Marseille: Body of a man found in the trunk of a burning car

Macabre discovery in Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône). The firefighters of the Phocaean city discovered in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday the body of a lifeless man in the trunk of a partially burnt-out car, a police source told Le Parisien.

The victim was found with “numerous wounds” to his face, his head covered with a garbage bag and his legs tied with cellophane, according to the same source.

Marseille firefighters were called shortly before 4am to intervene on a burning car on rue Berthe Girardet, near the Belle de Mai district, in the 3rd arrondissement. It was after bringing the fire under control that the firefighters discovered the body in the trunk.

They also discovered that gasoline had been sprayed all over the vehicle, police said, adding that the car in question had been reported stolen.

His identity unknown

No information has yet been provided on the identity of this man or on his possible criminal record. According to a source close to the case, he is around twenty years old. An investigation has been opened and entrusted to the Interdepartmental Service of the Judicial Police (SIPJ) to determine the circumstances of this death and the attempt to cover up the homicide.

If it turns out that this homicide was committed against a backdrop of drug trafficking, it would be the eighth proven drug homicide of the year, according to an AFP census. The previous one took place on July 10, with the death of a 20-year-old man shot dead in the 14th arrondissement, cité des Iris, in the impoverished neighborhoods of the north of France’s second city.
