Former Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has praised Spain coach Luis de la Fuente for his excellent work in guiding La Roja to the Euro 2024 title,
But the Special One also took some credit for the victory, albeit with a touch of humour.
The Portuguese coach recalled that it was he who gave Real Madrid debuts to Nacho Fernandez, who won the Champions League as Real Madrid captain this season, and Alvaro Morata, who captained the Spanish team in that victorious Euro.
Mourinho takes credit for La Roja
“Congratulations to them and to the coach who gave them their start when they were just kids in the training center”he said with a laugh.
He did, however, take some of the blame for not doing so with Dani Carvajal. Mourinho said at the time that he had not understood that Dani Carvajal was such a special player.
Carvajal then left for Bayer Leverkusen, but the Blancos activated their buyout clause to bring him back the following summer. As a reminder, according to some rumours, Mourinho could have taken charge of Portugal before the appointment of Roberto Martinez, but his debut in international football will have to wait.
