The French Rugby Federation has made a “report to the public prosecutor” following racist remarks made in a video by France XV full-back Melvyn Jaminet, FFR president Florian Grill announced on Tuesday. This report, he specified, was made on July 12 “in order to shed full light on the extremely serious remarks made” in a video posted on social networks following the first test match of the Blues played on July 6 in Mendoza against the Argentinian Pumas.
The player immediately left the France group
“My mother who asks me if I partied (he sighs). I swear to you, the first Arab I meet on the road, I’ll hit him with my helmet,” declared a visibly angry Jaminet (25, Toulon, 20 caps) in this short undated video, posted on Instagram and then deleted.
In a statement published shortly after the video was broadcast, the French Rugby Federation condemned “in the strongest terms” the comments made by Melvyn Jaminet, “totally unacceptable and contrary to the fundamental values of our sport.” The player had “been sidelined with immediate effect” and left the France squad, the FFR added, stressing that an “internal investigation” was underway to “take appropriate measures.”
On the evening of July 7, the international full-back published an apology message on his Instagram account, saying he was “deeply sorry and ashamed.”
In addition, the Toulon club, which immediately condemned its player’s comments, announced the opening of an “internal investigation”. According to several media outlets, Jaminet is expected at the RCT headquarters on Friday for an interview prior to a sanction.
