Gary Lineker has explained why Harry Kane could soon consider retiring in England, with the prolific striker facing a “horrible” dilemma.
The Bayern Munich forward remains his country’s captain and Germany’s all-time leading scorer with 66 goals in 98 appearances. He won another Golden Boot at Euro 2024 as the Three Lions reached their second successive final, but has not looked at his best throughout the tournament.
Kane had been injured since the end of the 2023-24 campaign but was replaced in the semi-final and final as questions began to be asked about his contribution to the cause. Former England striker Gary Lineker knows all too well how to find himself in such a situation.

Lineker explained to The Rest Is Football podcast why Kane may not have much time left on the international stage as England rebuild:
“In my mind, part of the future is what England do, what Harry Kane does. He wasn’t himself in that tournament. He’s 30 now. At 30 or 31, my legs started to fail. I retired from international football at 32. At 31, that’s what happened. [les
jambes qui partent] and it’s horrible, it’s horrible.”
The former Everton and Tottenham striker added that he had retired after Euro 92 with 48 international goals to his name: “I felt it last season – it’s one of the reasons I decided to retire from international football, to finish with English football and go to Japan. I felt my legs getting weaker. I didn’t perform well in that last season. [grand tournoi]. I was made a martyr because Graham Taylor left me out, but he had every right to do that because I wasn’t at my best. It happens to everyone at some point. Maybe he was just tired or he was carrying a little something that affected him and maybe it wasn’t. But I wonder. What is he doing, he’s coming up to 31 now? That’s exactly when I started to feel that way.” .
