A taboo is dissipating in Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky surprised everyone on Monday by saying he wanted “Russian representatives” to attend an upcoming peace summit, without a date being set. The head of state had until now always rejected any discussions with Moscow as long as Vladimir Putin’s troops were present in the occupied parts of Ukrainian territory.
“Volodymyr Zelensky must realize that it is time to change gear: the situation is so much against him,” says Philippe Migault, director of the European Center for Strategic Analysis (CEAS). The Kremlin launched its large-scale invasion almost two and a half years ago. Its army is advancing slowly but surely on the front, gaining ground almost every day.
