It is the first highlight of a Republican convention shaken by the attempted assassination of the former president. On his Truth Social network, Donald Trump announced that he had designated JD Vance to become his running mate during the election campaign. He will also be his future vice president, if he wins the election on November 5. “I have determined that the person best suited to serve as Vice President of the United States is Senator JD Vance, from the great State of Ohio,” Donald Trump said.
James David Vance, a best-selling author who became a senator from Ohio in the US Congress, was one of the favourites to fill the post. North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and the influential Latino senator from Florida, Marco Rubio, were also regularly mentioned.
Meanwhile, Republican delegates gathered in Milwaukee nominated Donald Trump as their candidate for the Nov. 5 presidential election, a mission the septuagenarian will formally accept Thursday in a speech that will be the highlight of the party’s convention.
An expected coronation
Already in the Wisconsin city, Donald Trump will likely be greeted with renewed fervor by tens of thousands of supporters. The climax of the convention will take place Thursday, when the 78-year-old former president will be officially designated as the Republican nominee. His coronation will be formalized during a spectacular evening, punctuated by the release of 100,000 red, white and blue balloons.
The major themes of the Republican convention, under high security and where more than 50,000 participants are expected, will be purchasing power, immigration, crime and the security guaranteed by a strong America. With a slogan: “Make America great again”, a nod to Trump’s slogan in 2016.
