Between the megafires of the summer of 2022 in Gironde and the summer of 2023 recorded as the hottest ever measured on Earth, the effects of climate change are already being felt harshly in France. In its report published this Monday, Oxfam France calls for political commitment from the executive, pending the formation of a new government. “France is not ready to face climate change,” deplores Quentin Ghesquière, advocacy officer at the NGO and co-author of the report.
Exacerbated social inequalities
“At least 26 of the 50 fundamental rights are directly threatened in France due to the State’s negligence in terms of adaptation, including the right to health and the right to education,” the report notes. “It is estimated that, by 2030, 55% of nursery schools will experience heat waves above 35 degrees.
