Donald Trump assassination attempt: What we know
The US presidential campaign has been in turmoil since Saturday night. Donald Trump was injured in the ear and evacuated after several shots were fired at a rally on Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania, which left one spectator dead and two seriously injured.
Before being exfiltrated, the 78-year-old former president raised his fist in the air in defiance, calling for “fighting,” an image that is being played over and over again and has already become historic. He also confirmed his intention to travel to Milwaukee on Sunday, where the Republican convention is taking place from Monday and where security will be reinforced.
The alleged shooter, shot dead by law enforcement, has been identified by the FBI as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20. He is believed to have acted alone and has no identified ideological affiliation. The US federal police consider this assassination attempt to be a “potential act of domestic terrorism.”
“We must come together as a nation,” said US President Joe Biden at the White House, who then addressed the nation, before calling on Americans to “lower the temperature of our political life.”
