With the award of TV rights to the DAZN and BeIn Sports group, we can expect a surge in IPTV subscription requests.
Since Sunday evening, we know the platforms that will broadcast the new Ligue 1 season for the period 2024-2029. For a sum of €500 million, the DAZN group and that of BeIn Sports have recovered the TV rights to the French championship. But these two media could face a rival that does not fight fairly, namely IPTV.
The amount they paid did not really satisfy the players in the championship, and in particular the presidents of the clubs. The latter were hoping to recover much more in order to improve their financial situation. Instead, they will have to share crumbs and without any real perspective on the future.
IPTV providers are rubbing their hands
The clubs are not happy and the fans of the championship are not much more happy.
And for good reason; the prices offered for a subscription are incredible.. To be able to watch a month of competition without commitment and excluding the match reserved for BeIn Sports, you will have to pay 40 euros per month (DAZN). And if it is for a one-month subscription then the amount drops to 34 euros/month. Unheard of!
This situation is problematic, but it is profitable for one camp. Those who market the various IPTV offers. Indeed, the latter are rubbing their hands at the idea of being able to get even more customers at the entrance. And we can only imagine that this is the case. Despite all the measures taken by ARCOM and the awareness campaigns against audiovisual piracy, an influx of requests is inevitable. It must be said that with the purchasing power constantly falling in French households, it seems understandable to want to opt for an option at €90 per year with all the channels in the world, rather than paying €500 per year for a single broadcaster.
French football is heading straight for a wall
A few days ago, Pablo Longoria complained about the scourge that is IPTV, insisting that it significantly penalizes professional clubs. But it might be wise to take the problem the other way around and ask whether the leaders of French football are not encouraging this kind of excess by biting off more than they can chew.
