Argentina were once again crowned South American champions by beating Colombia (1-0).
A few hours after Spain’s victory in Europe, Argentina won the Copa America in the United States. The Albiceleste had a tough time in the final against a valiant Colombia team (1-0) but they ended up securing the victory.
The difference came in extra time and was the work of Lautaro Martinez. Inter freed his team in the 112th minutee minute, converting a service from Giovani Lo Celso. A great relief for the world champions, but also a heartbreak for the Cafeteros, who were very close to winning their second continental title.
Argentina had to do without Messi
Expected to guide Argentina to the top, Messi was not able to shine. The former Parisian only stayed on the pitch for an hour. Injured, he had to give up his place to Nico Gonzalez. From the bench, we saw him burst into tears, believing he was abandoning his teammates. This final is like his competition, which he went through rather discreetly with only one goal scored.
Note that this match was delayed by 1 hour and 22 minutes due to tensions near the stadium entrance. Many supporters without tickets tried to force their way into the stadium. Yet another failing organisation, which is likely to cause a lot of ink to flow two years before the 2026 World Cup.
