French coach Didier Deschamps does not only have support among his former players.
The football produced by the French team at the Euro has caused a lot of frustration. Despite this artistic low, Didier Deschamps has been confirmed in his functions by his hierarchy. He will remain at the head of the Blues at least until the expiration of his lease, in the summer of 2026.
This decision has generated a lot of criticism. Among supporters, observers but also in the family of former French internationals. And there is one who had the audacity to demand his head and the appointment of Zinédine Zidane to this position. A detractor who nevertheless has the distinction of having played under the orders of Deschamps. This is Jérôme Rothen.
Despite his past with Deschamps, he campaigns for Zidane
Speaking on his show on RMC Sport, the ex-Monegasque indicated that it was time for DD to make way for the French football icon. “I supported Deschamps because I have a lot of respect for the coach and the work he did at the head of the French team. He stabilised this selection and there were results. The image is very good too. And the players are not moving anymore, unlike in 2010. But besides that, it’s been 12 years. People have the right, and I am one of them, to expect results and also a little more emotion.”
Rothen is also convinced that he is not the only one asking for change: “We went from three-quarters supporting him to only one-quarter. Three-quarters want Zidane to arrive. And deep down, it will hurt him, but he can say: ‘People are perhaps right. I wanted to go until 2026 but I will leave the place to Zizou’.”
It was on the Monaco side that Rothen met Deschamps as a coach. Together,
They had notably reached the final of the 2023/2024 Champions League. The Bayonne technician has since come a long way. Rothen, for his part, has not managed to achieve the slightest accomplishment.
