Germany, which has the strongest economy in the European Union, wants to ban the use of Chinese components in parts used to build its 5G networks.

This measure should take effect from 2026.

Nancy Faeser, Germany’s interior minister, explained that the country was seeking to protect itself from possible espionage:

We must reduce security risks. We must become more independent and more resilient to crises. On the Chinese side, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized the decision, which he considers restrictive for the markets.
