Two cyclists killed after being knocked down, suspected driver in custody

Two cyclists died in the night from Wednesday to Thursday in Aveyron, knocked down by a vehicle which fled, according to the public prosecutor’s office, which announced that it had taken a suspect into custody.

The two young men, aged 18 and 19, were found lying on the ground on a departmental road near the town of Martiel, not far from a campsite, according to the Rodez prosecutor’s office.

“The condition of the bikes suggests that they were hit, according to the initial findings of the investigation,” the police said.

Forty-year-old arrested

A judicial investigation has been opened and a man, aged around forty, whose van was found “damaged near the scene of the incident” has been taken into custody “under the charge of involuntary manslaughter aggravated by the hit and run”, the prosecution said in a press release.

“The person concerned has no criminal record and toxicological analyses have not revealed any consumption of narcotics or alcohol,” added the prosecution, before specifying that “investigations are underway, in particular, to verify the concordance of the vehicle debris with the van driven by the person in police custody.”
