Olivier Giroud, it’s over

The Euro is one of the few missing lines in his well-stocked CV. After announcing his departure from European football to take up the American challenge, Olivier Giroud did not hide his ambition to win the European Nations Championship for his last crusade with the French team.

An adventure with a rather bitter taste for the moment. An essential soldier of the Didier Deschamps era, Olivier Giroud has indeed had to make do with a few crumbs since the curtain went up on this Euro 2024. Worse, the last match of the Blues against Belgium, in the round of 16 (1-0), marked the end of an era in his personal history with the Blues.

Giroud, the end of an era

Since Didier Deschamps’ arrival in 2012, Olivier Giroud has taken part in 6 major international competitions: the 2014 World Cup, Euro 2016, the 2018 World Cup, Euro 2021, the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024. During this period, Giroud has earned minutes in all of Les Bleus’ matches.

However, for the first time since 2012, the centre forward did not come into play during a national team match on Monday against Belgium (1-0). A rather surprising end to the series for the top scorer in the history of the Blues (57 goals in 136 caps), whose downgrading seems inevitable. It remains to be seen whether the striker will have a surge of pride to offer himself a moment of glory in the rest of this competition.
