While he was expected at Chelsea, the Spanish winger Nico Williams could head to another big English club.
Arsenal have matched Chelsea’s offer for Athletic Bilbao striker Nico Williams.
Chelsea have informed Athletic Bilbao that they are prepared to exercise Williams’ €58m buyout clause and have also offered the player a €15m-a-year contract, three times his current salary, AS reports.
Williams prefers to stay in La Liga
However, after learning of Chelsea’s approach, Arsenal in turn made contact with the Basque club and sought in turn to recover the services of the player of Ghanaian origin.
Williams, for his part, prefers FC Barcelona, but the Catalans do not have the spending power to compete with Chelsea and Arsenal. They therefore need a significant sale to finance any transfer, something that president Joan Laporta is currently working on.
The only certainty, for now, is that Williams will not make a decision on his future before the Euro. A competition in which he is shining brightly at the moment.
