The show We just want to laugh about it was created by Laurent Ruquier and launched in 2010 on France 2, the aim of which was to reveal new comedic talents through sketches produced by comedians, often amateurs or little known to the general public. The jury was composed of personalities from the world of humor and entertainment, including Jean Benguigui, Catherine Barma, Isabelle Mergault and Stephanie Bataille. Among the comedians who made careers after their time on the show, we can cite Kev Adams, Arnaud Tsamère, Jérémy Ferrari, Florent Peyre or Waly Dia. After the show ended in 2014, The 35-year-old comedian has steered his own shiplanding several roles on television.
Viewers found him in the series Central police station broadcast on M6. In 2018 he got a recurring role in a French Netflix series, Osmosis. When our colleagues from Society ask Waly Dia to talk about his years on the show We just want to laugh about itthe latter does not hold back. “It’s both a weapon of exposition and the worst thing for comedians,” he confides at first. And adds: “You have very little time, an imposed subject and, in addition, you are in front of millions of people, so it’s the best way to do anything. At the time, I had already started this political humor, I spoke about Françafrique, the Islam/terrorism amalgam, slavery […] When I put in names of politicians, they cut it off.. One of the biggest censorships I’ve ever had was on this show. They cut out entire sketches.”.
The young man who appeared on Laurent Ruquier’s show for two seasons, remembers “unhealthy” moments on the France 2 show. “In two years, we must have written, I don’t know, 50-60 sketches. This show was crazy, almost unhealthy in many places.“he admitted. The latter also specified that the jury’s grading method had nothing to do with “professional”. “These were people who had never made a joke who came to judge us, who were capable of humiliating kids who were starting outlike that, because they were at the end of their career from which they could not recover”he added.
