A month after the shooting, members of the Slovak parliament passed a resolution calling on all political parties, civic organizations and media to respect the election results and refrain from spreading hatred against the democratically elected government.
The Slovak Deputy Prime Minister said that the Prime Minister, Robert Ficoreportedly has ongoing health problems, after surviving a shooting attack in May.
Robert Kaliňák said that Mr. Fico, who was shot several times in the abdomen, would likely have musculoskeletal problems, but that his condition was gradually improving.
“His state of health is still far from ideal. After a gunshot wound to the abdomen, these organs no longer function as they did at 17 or 30 years old. It is still very irregular. As part of his regular rehabilitation, doctors are doing everything they can to make sure he can do his job to his full potential, and we’re getting close.“, did he declare.
Mr Kaliňák said he expected Mr Fico to make another public appearance in the coming days, without specifying whether it would be in person or by video.
The announcement is an apparent improvement from the assessment of Mr. Fico’s condition in a video released in early June, his first public appearance since the shooting, in which he said: “It will be a small miracle if I return to work in several weeks“.
An attack that shocked far beyond Slovakia’s borders
The populist Slovak Prime Minister was shot in the abdomen at close range as he greeted his supporters after a government meeting in Handlová, a town in central Slovakia, on May 15.
Videos showed him approaching people gathered to shake his hand. A man among this small group of supporters then emerged, fired five shots before being tackled by the Prime Minister’s bodyguards, and arrested.
Robert Fico immediately underwent a five-hour surgery to treat the multiple injuries, followed by another two-hour operation two days later to remove dead tissue from his wounds.
At the end of May, he was flown from the hospital in Banská Bystrica to the capital Bratislava, where he has been receiving treatment at home until now.
The Specialized Criminal Court of the city of Pezinok ordered the continued detention of the suspect, who is accused of attempted murder.
Prosecutors have asked police not to publicly identify the suspect or release details about the case.
Mr Fico said he forgave his attacker and felt “no harm”no hatred towards the foreigners who shot me“.
“I will not take any legal action against him and will not seek compensation. I forgive him and leave him to reflect on what he did and the reasons that led him to do it.“, did he declare.
A law adopted just after the attack
Barely a month after the shooting, all 130 MPs in the Slovak parliament passed a resolution calling on all political parties, civic organizations and media to respect the election results and refrain from spreading hatred against the democratically elected government. .
The resolution was adopted after public opinion was shocked by the attack on Mr. Fico, which many believe stems from an atmosphere of toxicity and lies surrounding Slovak politics.
