Former Italian coach Fabio Capello has slammed Italy coach Luciano Spalletti and his team.
Italy left Euro 2024 in the round of 16, losing to Switzerland (2-0) after qualifying at the last minute in the group stage. A real snub for the Squadra Azzura, title holders, which has sparked a wave of harsh criticism in Italy.
Former England manager Fabio Capello did not mince his words. “I felt ashamed (at this elimination, editor’s note), a bit like when I came back from the 1974 World Cup as a footballer”he confided to The Gazzetta dello Sport.
“I have never seen an Italian team like this”
For the former Italian coach, the main responsible for this failure is coach Luciano Spalletti, whom he considered “arrogant” in relation to his choices. “They are two different professions”he analyzed.
“It is no coincidence that we do not talk about a coach, but about a selector. The coach must first choose the players based on what he sees in the championships. He can have his own idea of football, but must also think about how the different elements are used in his team and sometimes adapt. The reason is simple: we do not have time to work day by day.”
Capello did not spare the players either. “From what we saw on the pitch, I think the confusion was mostly generated by the players”he continued.
“They must feel the weight of the jersey. I have never seen an Italy team like this.”
