Athletics. Sha’Carri Richardson misses Olympic qualification in 200m

Huge hard blow for Sha’Carri Richardson. The sprinter finished the 200m of her country’s Olympic selections in 4th position on the night of Saturday to Sunday in Eugene (Oregon). She misses her ticket for the Paris Games (July 26 – August 11) in this discipline

Winner of the 100m last week, Richardson failed in 22”16 (0.6 m/s of wind) in the 200m final, dominated by Gabby Thomas (21”81) ahead of Brittany Brown (21.90) and McKenzie Long (21”91).

100 and 4×100 m in Paris

This poor performance by Richardson, in bronze at the 2023 Worlds over the distance, constitutes a surprise after her impression left during the previous rounds: Thursday in the heats (21”99) then Friday in the semi-final (21”92) she had run faster leaving a great impression of ease.

The reigning 100m world champion, the new US sprint star will still be among the favourites on the straight at the Olympic Games where she should also compete in the 4x100m relay.

Saturday’s race, however, was successful for Gabby Thomas, bronze medalist in the half-lap at the Tokyo Games in 2021 and vice-world champion last summer, who will see the Games in the French capital.
