As he prepares to take over the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU from Monday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on Sunday the launch of a new alliance with a view to creating a new political group in the European Parliament.
The tone is set. As Hungary prepares to preside over the EU Council for the next six months from July 1, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban took advantage of a trip to Vienna, Austria, this Sunday to launch a “Patriotic Alliance” that could result in the creation of a new political group in the European Parliament.
Viktor Orban signed a manifesto between his party, Fidesz, the far-right populist Austrian FPO (Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs) party and with the ANO party of former Czech populist Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. Other signatures would be expected.
The Hungarian populist leader said on this occasion that this “new political force” (…) “will soon be the largest right-wing formation in the European Parliament”. He said they would fight the Brussels establishment which it accused of failing to “understood the wishes of the voters.”
This alliance intends to fight “against war, migration, inflation and the green deal” European, said the Hungarian.
It remains to be seen whether this momentum will be followed by concrete effects to succeed in building a new parliamentary group.
