Armed attacker shot dead outside Israeli embassy in Serbia

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said in a statement that the attacker had targeted a guard, hitting him in the neck.

An assailant, armed with a crossbow, injured a Serbian police officer who was guarding the Israeli embassy in Belgrade on Saturday, the Serbian Interior Ministry said. The police officer responded by fatally shooting the attacker. Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said in a statement that the attacker shot the officer, hitting him in the neck. He added that the officer then “used a weapon in self-defense to shoot the attacker, who died from his injuries”The police officer was conscious when he was taken to Belgrade’s main emergency hospital, where he is scheduled to undergo surgery, he added.

The identity of the attacker remains to be determined.

“All circumstances of the attack and its possible motivations are under investigation,” declared the minister. Serbia has maintained close relations with Israel over its armed intervention in Gaza.
