EVANSVILLE, Indiana (TCD) — Two women, aged 23 and 19, are accused of driving down the prices of items at the Dollar General store where they worked and causing losses of several thousand dollars.
According to the affidavit obtained by WFIE-TV, Thursday, Jan. 26, Evansville Police Department officers attended the Dollar General on Lincoln Avenue after receiving a call about a robbery. Upon arrival, they learned that Amber Smith, 23, and Katelyn Wells, 19, had allegedly lowered the price of items in the store and bought them at a discount.
Officers spoke to the store manager, who said the business ended up losing thousands of dollars from the theft, WEVV-TV reports. In total, the store reportedly lost $1,700 from Smith and $4,600 from Wells.
According to WFIE, Smith and Wells eventually confessed in written statements to lowering the prices of in-store items.
Police told WEVV that Wells initially refused to speak to authorities. Smith, however, reportedly said she lowered prices because other Dollar General employees were doing so.
Dollar General officials believe there are more people involved in the price dumping and theft, and the investigation is ongoing.
Both Wells and Smith were arrested, booked, and later released from Vanderburgh County Jail, records show.
